Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .45 Hand Ejector U.S. Army Model 1917 “Brazilian Contract” is a historically significant large-frame military revolver that combines the rugged wartime heritage of the original American Model 1917 with a unique chapter of South American military history, making it one of the most collectible variations of the classic Smith & Wesson N-frame revolver line. Manufactured by Smith & Wesson in 1937 for the Brazilian government, these revolvers were based directly on the original U.S. Army Model 1917 revolvers produced during World War I and retained the same robust, large-frame design chambered in .45 ACP. One of the defining characteristics of the Brazilian Contract revolvers is the prominent Brazilian crest stamped on the side plate, typically featuring the national emblem of Brazil above the date “1937,” immediately distinguishing them from standard U.S. military production examples. Like the wartime Model 1917, the revolver utilized half-moon clips to allow reliable use and simultaneous extraction of rimless .45 ACP cartridges in a revolver cylinder, though the guns could also often fire loose cartridges individually because of the cylinder’s chamber design. Built on Smith & Wesson’s large N-frame platform, the revolver featured a six-shot cylinder, 5.5-inch barrel, fixed military-style sights, lanyard ring, smooth walnut grips, and blued finish consistent with military sidearms of the era. Mechanically, the revolver operated in both double-action and single-action modes and used Smith & Wesson’s famously smooth lockwork, which contributed to an excellent trigger pull and dependable service performance.

In practical use, the Brazilian Contract Model 1917 earned a strong reputation for durability, accuracy, and powerful ballistic performance, with the .45 ACP cartridge delivering substantial stopping power, while the heavy steel frame helped moderate recoil. Many of these revolvers remained in Brazilian military and police service for decades before eventually being imported into the United States as surplus firearms, where they became highly sought after by collectors and shooters alike. Enthusiasts often appreciated the revolver’s combination of historical military markings, robust American craftsmanship, and practical shootability, especially because surplus examples were frequently well-used but mechanically sound. The revolver’s moon clip system also gave it surprisingly fast reload capability for a military revolver of its era, a feature later embraced heavily in competitive revolver shooting. Over time, the Brazilian Contract 1917 became especially desirable because it represented both a continuation of World War I-era American revolver production and a unique foreign military contract tied to interwar history. Today, the Smith & Wesson .45 Hand Ejector U.S. Army Model 1917 “Brazilian Contract” is regarded as one of the most fascinating and collectible military revolvers of the 20th century, admired for its historic Brazilian markings, powerful .45 ACP chambering, rugged N-frame construction, and enduring legacy as a classic American military revolver with international service history.
