Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this scarce bolt-action rifle today for auction; this is the Berlin-Lubecker “237/1939” Coded K98 Mauser!

According to the consigner, all early pre-war indications on this rifle include the flat butt plate, Reichswehr markings on the stock (see picture 56), absence of front sight hood divots, and no capture or import markings. The rifle reportedly retains capture screws on the floor plate and trigger, and the consigner believes it to be a veteran “cigarette rifle” bring-back—customization of the bolt would have allowed GIs to bring these rifles home, since they were not considered standard Wehrmacht-issued weapons.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
This Berlin-Lübecker K98 is a well-preserved example of the classic Mauser service rifle, manufactured in 1939 and carrying the relatively scarce factory code “237.” Chambered in 8mm Mauser with a 24-inch blued barrel and fitted with the standard blade-on-serrated-ramp front and adjustable rear sights, this rifle retains the clean, purposeful lines and robust construction that made the K98 a benchmark for bolt-action military rifles. The smooth wood stock and overall condition contribute to its appeal as a representative service piece from the late 1930s.

Beyond its practical attributes — reliable bolt action, widely available 8mm ammunition, and proven sighting arrangement — the scarcity of the “237” code and the 1939 manufacture date make this particular rifle especially interesting to collectors and historians. The combination of original finish, matching features, and the documented factory marking elevates its significance: it’s not only a functional, service-grade Mauser but also a collectible artifact that reflects a specific production lineage and period of manufacture.
