Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The FNA-Brescia Carcano Modello 1891 Moschetto da Cavalleria, commonly known as the Carcano Cavalry Carbine, is a compact Italian bolt-action military rifle produced by Fabbrica onale d'Armi di Brescia as part of the long-serving Carcano rifle family adopted by Italy in the late 19th century. Designed specifically for cavalry troops and mounted units, the Moschetto da Cavalleria was a shortened and highly maneuverable version of the standard Modello 1891 infantry rifle, chambered most commonly in 6.5×52mm Carcano and utilizing the distinctive Mannlicher-style en bloc clip-feeding system associated with the Carcano series. First introduced in the 1890s and remaining in service through both World Wars, the rifle became one of the most recognizable Italian military firearms for its unusual, permanently attached folding bayonet and compact dimensions. One of the defining characteristics of the Cavalry Carbine is its side-folding spike bayonet mounted beneath the barrel, which could be quickly extended and locked into place without needing a separate scabbard or external attachment. This feature made the rifle especially practical for mounted troops who needed compact equipment that could be rapidly deployed in close combat situations. Mechanically, the rifle utilized a turn-bolt action with dual locking lugs and fed from six-round en-bloc clips inserted into an internal magazine, with the empty clip automatically dropping out through the bottom of the magazine once the final round was fired. The short barrel and lightweight stock made the Moschetto da Cavalleria easy to carry on horseback and quick to maneuver in confined conditions compared to full-length infantry rifles of the era.

In practical use, the Carcano Cavalry Carbine earned a reputation for lightweight handling, rugged field reliability, and relatively mild recoil due to the 6.5mm cartridge. Soldiers appreciated the rifle’s compactness and portability, while the folding bayonet gave it a distinctive military appearance unmatched by most contemporary carbines. Although the Carcano system has historically received mixed opinions regarding ultimate battlefield performance compared to some other military rifles of the period, properly maintained examples were fully capable service weapons that saw extensive combat use over several decades. Today, FNA-Brescia-produced Moschetto da Cavalleria carbines are highly collectible among military surplus enthusiasts and historians, admired for their unique design features, historical significance, and recognizable place within Italian military firearms history.
