Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Izhevsk Arsenal M91/30 is one of the most iconic military bolt-action rifles of the 20th century, representing the standard Soviet service rifle during much of World War II and a refined version of the earlier Mosin–Nagant design. Manufactured at Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, one of the Soviet Union’s primary arms production facilities, the M91/30 was introduced in 1930 as an updated variant of the original Mosin–Nagant Model 1891, incorporating improvements such as a stronger, round receiver (in later production), a simplified rear sight graduated in meters, and manufacturing changes that allowed for faster mass production. Chambered in the powerful 7.62×54mmR cartridge—one of the longest-serving military cartridges still in use—the rifle is known for its robust construction, long effective range, and ability to function reliably in harsh conditions, including the extreme cold of the Eastern Front. The M91/30 typically features a 28.7-inch barrel, a five-round internal magazine loaded via stripper clips, and a straight bolt handle, with many rifles equipped with a permanently attached socket bayonet during wartime use. During World War II, the M91/30 was produced in enormous numbers, particularly at Izhevsk, where manufacturing was streamlined to meet wartime demand, resulting in rifles that often display utilitarian finishes but exceptional durability. Some M91/30 rifles were selected for sniper conversion, fitted with PU scopes and turned-down bolt handles, and became famous in the hands of Soviet marksmen. Despite its relatively simple design and sometimes heavy trigger pull, the rifle is capable of respectable accuracy, especially with quality ammunition. Today, the Izhevsk M91/30 is widely collected and appreciated for its historical significance, rugged reliability, and role as a symbol of Soviet industrial strength during the war, offering modern enthusiasts a tangible connection to one of the most pivotal periods in 20th-century history.
