Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this HIGH CONDITION semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction; this is the Ithaca M1911 US Army.
The inclusion of the original box is a significant rarity and adds greatly to the collector appeal of this Ithaca Model 1911A1 U.S. Army pistol, as WWII military handguns were issued and handled as service weapons rather than preserved as commercial boxed packages. Their original cardboard boxes were typically discarded, damaged, destroyed, or separated from the pistol during military storage, shipment, surplus release, and decades of private ownership. Unlike a commercial firearm box that may have been retained by the original buyer, military packaging was viewed as temporary and utilitarian, making surviving original boxes especially uncommon today. When found with the correct pistol, the box adds an important layer of provenance, originality, and completeness, elevating the pistol from a collectible wartime sidearm to a more complete and historically significant U.S. military package.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The M1911A1 type of firearm operates through a recoil mechanism and is chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. It is a semi-automatic pistol that uses a magazine to feed ammunition. The M1911A1 was introduced in 1924, succeeding its predecessor, the Colt Model 1911. Colt and other companies like Remington Rand, Ithaca Gun Company, Union Switch & Signal, and Singer manufactured this gun. The Ithaca Gun Company was founded in Ithaca, New York, in 1883 by William Henry Baker, Leroy Smith, and several other partners. The company played a significant role in the early industry of Tompkins County, particularly during World War I and World War II. Notable patrons of the company included John Philip Sousa, Annie Oakley, and Alfred Lee Loomis. At the time, Sousa was the president of the American Trap Shooters Association, and Ithaca Gun Company named a shotgun after him, the Sousa Grade. Annie Oakley utilized an Ithaca Flues model in her competition and exhibition shooting. In 1917, Alfred Loomis and his brother-in-law purchased 17,000 acres of Hilton Head Island, which they established as a private hunting preserve, and used Ithaca shotguns for the guests. Dwight D. Eisenhower and George C. Marshall were owners of Ithaca double-barrel shotguns.

The Ithaca Gun Company manufactured 400,000 M1911A1 pistols from 1943 to 1945, equivalent to the number produced by Colt. The quality of Ithaca guns was comparable to that of other manufacturers, and all Ithaca M1911A1 pistols bear an inspector mark 'FJA,' which stands for Frank J. Atwood. The British-proof markings on this pistol do not necessarily mean that the weapon served with the UK forces in World War II. Such markings simply indicate that the firearm was in Great Britain at one time and subsequently departed the country. British law requires that any gun in Great Britain be inspected and "proofed" (and so marked) before leaving the country. It certainly doesn't preclude a Canadian soldier posted to England during WWII with the M1911 in his possession. When he departed England to return home, his pistol could have been proofed and marked, but this is speculation. While certainly not impossible, it cannot be assumed that the British acquired the pistol during WWII.
