Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Finnish M39, officially designated the Sotilaskivääri M/39 and affectionately nicknamed the Ukko-Pekka after President Pehr Evind Svinhufvud, represents the pinnacle of the Mosin-Nagant’s evolution. Developed post-Winter War to address the logistical and design shortcomings of earlier domestic variants like the M27, M28, and M28/30, the M39 was a collaborative effort between the Finnish Army (Maavoimat) and the Civil Guard (Suojelukunta). Chambered primarily for the domestic 7.62x53mmR cartridge, the M39 utilized recycled Imperial Russian and Soviet-captured receivers but completely overhauled the platform's ergonomics and mechanical accuracy. It featured a rigid, high-quality service barrel with a modernized nominal groove diameter of .310 inches, a deliberate increase from earlier .308-inch Finnish specifications. This crucial adjustment allowed Finnish troops to safely fire captured Soviet 7.62x54mmR ammunition, increasing battlefield versatility without causing dangerous chamber pressures. The rifle's furniture was radically updated with a two-piece, pistol-grip or semi-pistol-grip birch stock featuring unique finger-joint splices designed to resist warping in arctic conditions, a dramatic departure from the straight-wrist stocks of traditional Mosins. The sights were heavily upgraded; the front sight featured robust, protective ears with windage-adjustable screws, while the rear tangent sight was calibrated in metric meters from 150 to 2,000 meters.

Production was carried out primarily by the private Sako factory, which fulfilled exclusive contracts for the Civil Guard marked Sk.Y—and the state-owned VKT (Valtion Kivääritehdas) facility, along with final assemblies handled by Army depots (AV3). These rifles saw brutal front-line service throughout the Continuation War (1941–1944) and the Lapland War, proving exceptionally accurate and rugged in sub-zero climates. Following the 1944 armistice and the forced disbandment of the Civil Guard, remaining Sk.Y stocks were absorbed into the regular army, frequently with the boxed [SA] stamp next to their original markings. Today, the M39 stands as a testament to Finnish engineering ingenuity, widely celebrated by military historians and surplus collectors as the finest, most accurate military bolt-action rifle ever built on the Mosin-Nagant action.
