Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this bolt-action rifle today for a penny-start auction, this is the Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG, Werk Steyr, Steyr, Austria "bnz coded / Mitchell's Mausers Kar98k.
Mitchell's Mausers represent a unique and highly recognizable chapter in the military surplus world, famous for bringing pristine-looking rifles to a wide audience of shooters. Operating heavily in the early 2000s, the company specialized in sourcing historic firearms—primarily wartime German Kar98ks and rugged Yugoslavian M48s—and expertly refurbished them to a clean, "factory new" presentation. Their deep cosmetic overhaul included carefully sanding the stocks to reveal a bright, clean wood grain, stripping and polishing the bolts to a bright chrome-like finish, and restamping the serial numbers so they matched neatly across all parts. While this extensive restoration process changed the rifle's original battlefield wear and historical value, it made these historic firearms incredibly approachable, visually stunning, and highly functional. Today, they are popular among everyday enthusiasts who want a beautiful, display-ready firearm that doubles as an exceptionally clean and accurate shooter on the firing range.

The left side of the receiver wall is marked "Mod. 98". The top of the barrel is marked "avk Au", alongside an Eagle proof mark. The left side of the barrel is marked with a "Star", alongside an "Eagle/Swatika" mark, and the serial number "3199d". The right side of the receiver is marked with very faint Waffenamt proof marks. The left side of the barrel -near the muzzle- is marked "GER 8MM MMC H.B. CA 73196".

The Karabiner 98 kurz, often abbreviated as the Kar98k, K98k, or simply Kar98, is a bolt-action rifle chambered for the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge. Officially adopted by the German Wehrmacht on 21 June 1935, the Kar98k replaced the earlier Gewehr 98 as the standard service rifle of the German military. While sometimes incorrectly referred to as the "K98," it is important to note that "K98" refers to a Polish copy of the Karabiner 98a, not the Kar98k itself. The Karabiner 98k was one of the final developments in the long line of Mauser military rifles, which had been in production since the late 19th century. The design of the Kar98k was intended to be more compact and practical than its predecessors. It was shorter and lighter than the Gewehr 98, making it more suitable for close combat and easier to handle, while still maintaining the power and accuracy of the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge. The rifle used a bolt-action mechanism, requiring the shooter to manually cycle the bolt after each shot. It featured a five-round internal magazine, which could be loaded using stripper clips or individual rounds. Although the Kar98k was initially the standard issue for all German infantry, it remained the primary service rifle throughout World War II, even as the Wehrmacht introduced semi-automatic and fully automatic rifles, such as the Gewehr 43 and the Sturmgewehr 44.

These newer rifles were designed to offer more firepower and faster rates of fire, but the Kar98k’s ruggedness, reliability, and long-range accuracy kept it in widespread use throughout the conflict.
