Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece (postwar, 3rd Model), also known as the “Pre-Model 17,” is a double-action/single-action revolver chambered in .22 Long Rifle and built on a square butt target K-frame with a postwar slide action hammer block. It features a 6-inch pinned barrel with a narrow or full-width serrated top rib and a 6-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.6". The early production barrel has a narrow serrated top rib with a slight taper that results in the loss of 2–4 serrations, later changing to a full-width serrated rib with no taper, and it is fitted with a 1/10-inch or 1/8-inch plain Patridge front sight and a micrometer-click rear sight. It is equipped with a .265" serrated trigger with an adjustable stop and a .375" checkered hammer, with a standard blue finish. The frame features a 6-groove forestrap and backstrap; many examples have an assembly fixture hole drilled under the grips, and it is fitted with checkered walnut grips featuring silver S&W monograms and a diamond around the screw escutcheon. Built on the K-frame with 5 screws, it was later produced with 4 screws when the upper sideplate screw was deleted.

Frames made between 1946 and 1948 are stamped "Made in U.S.A.", while frames made after 1948 feature the four-line address on the right side forward of the trigger guard. The serial number is found on the butt, cylinder face, yoke, behind the star extractor, right grip panel, and barrel flat. Serial range K101 to the end of the K series before transitioning to a three-letter prefix, produced circa 1946–1957, then continuing as the Model 17 until 1989.
