The Remington Model 81 Woodsmaster is a historically significant early semi-automatic sporting rifle developed from the innovative long-recoil firearm designs of John Browning. Introduced as the successor to the Remington Model 8, the Model 81 retained Browning’s distinctive operating system in which the barrel and bolt recoil together before separating to complete the cycling process, a mechanism closely related to that used in the famed Browning Auto-5 shotgun. Chambered in .35 Remington and fitted with a 22-inch barrel, adjustable rear sight, and smooth walnut furniture, the Woodsmaster combined powerful hunting capability with refined sporting styling, including its characteristic “humpback” receiver profile and improved pistol-grip stock design. Its takedown construction also enhanced portability and maintenance, contributing to its practical appeal among hunters and outdoorsmen of the era. Although more expensive than many contemporary rifles, the Model 81 remained in production until 1950 and is now widely respected as one of the most influential and collectible early American semi-automatic sporting rifles.
