The Winchester Model 61 Hammerless is a classic American pump-action rimfire rifle produced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company and widely regarded as one of the finest slide-action .22 rifles ever manufactured. Introduced in 1932 as the successor to the earlier Winchester Model 1890 and Model 1906 rifles, the Model 61 was designed to provide a smoother, more modern hammerless action while maintaining the rugged reliability and excellent handling qualities that made Winchester rimfire pumps famous among hunters and recreational shooters. Chambered in .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle, depending on configuration, with some variants later in production also chambered for .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, the rifle became extremely popular for small-game hunting, plinking, and gallery shooting. One of the defining characteristics of the Winchester 61 is its sleek internal hammer design, which eliminated the exposed external hammer found on earlier Winchester pump .22s and gave the rifle a streamlined appearance and faster handling qualities. The rifle featured a takedown design for easy transport and cleaning, a beautifully machined steel construction, walnut stocks, and Winchester’s famously smooth slide action, which allowed exceptionally fast and reliable cycling. Mechanically, the Model 61 utilized a tubular magazine beneath the barrel and a precision-machined pump-action system that became renowned for its buttery-smooth operation and outstanding reliability with a wide variety of rimfire ammunition. Early rifles were built with the high polish and hand-fitted craftsmanship associated with pre-1964 Winchester firearms, making them especially desirable among collectors today. 
 
In practical use, the Winchester 61 Hammerless earned a superb reputation for accuracy, smoothness, and durability. Shooters frequently praised the rifle’s excellent balance, natural pointing qualities, and exceptionally slick pump action, while hunters appreciated its reliability in the field for squirrel, rabbit, and other small-game hunting.
