Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Historically billed as the longest continuously manufactured shoulder firearm in the world, the Marlin 39 family began life as John Marlin’s side-loading Model 1891, famously used by Annie Oakley. The design soon evolved into the takedown Model 1897, transitioned into the Model 39 in 1921, and officially adopted the "39A" designation in 1939. Post-WWII production brought the highly collectible Model 39A "3rd Model" in 1946, marking a permanent factory transition to a fully blued receiver. This 3rd Model evolved through three distinct factory variations: the 1st variation (1946–1950) featured clean walnut wood; the 2nd variation (1951–1953) introduced a fluted comb stock, white liners, and a plastic pistol grip cap; and the 3rd variation (1954–1957) debuted Marlin's famous "Micro-Groove" rifling. Because mechanical redesigns over the decades were incredibly slight, the rifle is regarded as essentially the same design for over a century, with well in excess of two million produced. In this age of false economy, skimped manufacturing, and a proliferation of plastic and stamped steel parts, it is deeply refreshing to shoot and enjoy an American Classic that never sacrificed quality, heft, or feel for the sake of trendiness.

The Marlin 39A remains a favorite lever-action rifle for many and stands as one of the finest .22s ever engineered. Ultimately, not much can replace the feel of real walnut, the look of deep bluing, the precision fit of machined forgings, and the sheer robustness of this design. Comparatively few rifles, especially .22 rimfires, give you the feeling that they can—and should—be passed down through the generations, allowing the Marlin 39A to achieve that rare, precious distinction of being both best of breed and one of the finest firearms ever made.
