Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece (Postwar Third Model), commonly referred to by collectors as the “Pre-Model 17,” is one of the finest target revolvers ever produced and represents the pinnacle of traditional American rimfire revolver craftsmanship. Manufactured by Smith & Wesson from 1947 until model numbers were officially introduced in 1957, the Postwar Third Model K-22 Masterpiece was built on the medium-sized K-frame and chambered in .22 Long Rifle, offering shooters a revolver that closely duplicated the handling characteristics of larger centerfire service revolvers while providing the economy and minimal recoil of the rimfire cartridge. The Third Model featured the newly improved postwar hammer block safety system, a six-shot cylinder, a precision-rifled 6-inch barrel with a full-length rib, an adjustable micrometer rear sight, and a highly visible Patridge front sight that made it exceptionally well-suited for target shooting and marksmanship training. Finely polished blued finishes, checkered walnut Magna stocks, and target-style hammer and trigger options reflected the extraordinary level of craftsmanship associated with Smith & Wesson’s postwar production era.

Mechanically, the revolver utilized the company’s renowned double-action/single-action lockwork, producing an exceptionally smooth trigger pull and outstanding reliability. The K-22 Masterpiece quickly became a favorite among competitive shooters, law-enforcement officers, and recreational marksmen because of its remarkable accuracy and ability to replicate the feel of centerfire K-frame revolvers. In 1957, Smith & Wesson assigned model numbers to its revolver line, and the K-22 Masterpiece officially became the Model 17, making earlier examples highly desirable to collectors. Today, the Postwar Third Model “Pre-Model 17” remains one of the most sought-after rimfire revolvers ever manufactured, admired for its elegant styling, superb craftsmanship, and enduring reputation as one of the greatest target handguns in Smith & Wesson history.
