Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 1955 Ruger Standard is an early-production example of the pistol that launched Sturm, Ruger & Co. and forever changed the American rimfire handgun market. Introduced in 1949 as the company's very first firearm, the Ruger Standard quickly earned a reputation for reliability, affordability, and exceptional accuracy, and by 1955 it had become one of the most successful .22-caliber pistols in the country. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle and utilizing a simple blowback operating system, the pistol features a fixed barrel and distinctive tubular receiver inspired in part by the appearance of the German Luger. Early examples from this period are characterized by their slim tapered barrels, blued finish, fixed sights, and checkered black plastic grips with the Ruger eagle medallions. The fixed-barrel design contributes to excellent inherent accuracy, while the robust construction and straightforward internal mechanism provide remarkable durability and long service life. Lightweight and easy to handle, the 1955 Ruger Standard became a favorite for plinking, target shooting, and small game hunting, introducing countless shooters to the sport. Today, these early Standard Models are highly desirable among collectors due to their historical significance as one of Bill Ruger's first creations and as the foundation of the immensely successful Mark Series pistols that followed. A 1955 Ruger Standard represents an important piece of American firearms history and remains admired for its timeless design, dependable performance, and enduring collector appeal.
