Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 740 Woodsmaster is a pioneering semi-automatic rifle that was manufactured by Remington Arms from 1955 to 1960. Developed by Remington’s Research & Development team as a modern, gas-operated improvement over the older recoil-operated Model 8 and 81, it was engineered for hunters who valued rapid follow-up shots without sacrificing power. The rifle features a side-ejection port for reliable cycling and feeds from a standard 4-round detachable box magazine. Over its brief five-year production run, approximately 251,398 units were built, spanning serial number blocks from roughly 1001 to 253821. It was chambered in a versatile lineup of centerfire calibers, led by the ubiquitous .30-06 Springfield in 1955, followed by the .308 Winchester in 1956, and both the .244 and .280 Remington in 1957. Offered in various configurations ranging from the standard 740A to the upscale 740ADL, BDL Deluxe, and even highly decorated Peerless (740D) and Premier (740F) grades, the Model 740 ultimately paved the way for its successor, the Model 742 in 1960. Today, it remains a foundational collectible that marks Remington's transition into modern autoloading sporting rifles.
