Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Blackhawk is a six-shot, single-action revolver manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co., offered in a wide range of calibers, barrel lengths, and finishes to suit both shooters and collectors alike. For decades, it has held a respected place in the firearms world, earning a reputation as a rugged, accurate, and distinctly American revolver with enduring appeal among enthusiasts and collectors. Early production Blackhawks followed a more traditional single-action design reminiscent of classic Colt revolvers, requiring the hammer to be placed at half-cock for loading and unloading. In that configuration, the revolver was not intended to be carried with all six chambers loaded and the hammer resting on a live round, as this presented a potential safety risk if the firearm were struck or dropped. In 1973, Ruger addressed these concerns with the New Model Blackhawk, a significant evolution in the platform’s design. This updated version eliminated the need for half-cock operation during loading and unloading and incorporated a transfer bar safety system. The transfer bar mechanism prevents the hammer from directly striking the firing pin unless the trigger is fully depressed, greatly reducing the risk of accidental discharge. This improvement enhanced both practical safety and user confidence, while also helping to reduce potential liability concerns. Following this advancement, Ruger offered a retrofit program to convert earlier “three-screw” Blackhawks to the new transfer bar system, further extending the platform’s safety improvements across its existing lineup while preserving the revolver’s legacy and continued use.
