Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this Early Production double-action revolver for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Cobra - First Issue.
The first-issue Colt Cobra, produced from 1950 to 1972, is a compact revolver that evolved in design over its production run. Early models featured a square butt, while later examples transitioned to a round butt for improved ergonomics. In 1966, Colt updated the frame to the shorter grip style used on the Agent, simplifying production, and added overlapping wood grips to create the feel of a full-size grip despite the compact frame.
This particular example of the Colt Cobra was offered on special order with the Colt hammer shroud installed, providing a smooth, snag-free profile ideal for concealed carry. The shroud covered the hammer, reducing the risk of catching on clothing while maintaining the revolver’s functionality and classic aesthetic, making it a practical option for those seeking both discretion and traditional Colt craftsmanship.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Cobra occupies an important place in Colt’s revolver lineage as a compact, lightweight design that reflects mid-20th-century shifts in personal handgun use. Originally conceived as a more portable alternative to heavier steel-framed revolvers, the Cobra paired a small-frame profile with materials intended to reduce carry weight without sacrificing practical handling. Its clean lines, understated appearance, and emphasis on balance made it well-suited to discreet carry, while still maintaining the visual and mechanical identity associated with Colt’s double-action revolvers. In this sense, the Cobra exemplifies a period when manufacturers sought to make revolvers more accommodating to everyday use, responding to changing lifestyles and expectations of convenience.

From a broader analytical perspective, the Colt Cobra can be viewed as a study in functional refinement rather than radical innovation. Its design philosophy prioritizes controllability, reliability, and ease of carry, reinforcing the revolver’s reputation as a dependable personal-defense tool. The Cobra’s enduring recognition stems not from excess features, but from the clarity of its purpose and execution. Over time, it has come to symbolize Colt’s ability to adapt classic revolver concepts to evolving needs while preserving brand character. As a result, the Colt Cobra holds lasting appeal among enthusiasts and collectors alike, representing a balance between traditional revolver craftsmanship and practical, everyday usability.
