Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1927, Colt rebranded the Army Special to better reflect its true customer base, renaming it the Official Police. The name fit perfectly, as the revolver quickly became the standard sidearm for countless police departments—including the New York City Police, Boston Police, and federal agencies such as the FBI and the Treasury Department. Serving as one of the premier law enforcement revolvers well into the 1960s, the Official Police also earned favor with private security firms, industrial plant guards, and civilian shooters who valued its strength and reliability. As one of Colt’s most popular revolvers, the Official Police was offered in numerous variations. Finishes included deep blue and bright nickel, while barrel lengths ranged from 2", 4", 5", to 6". It was chambered in a wide variety of calibers: .22 LR, .32-20, .38-200 British (.38 S&W), .38 Special, and .41 Long Colt. Most models featured a square butt, though rounded butts were available as an option, and heavy-barrel versions—typically in 6"—were also produced. Grips began as checkered walnut with silver Colt medallions, later replaced in 1947 by molded “Coltwood” plastic grips with silver-colored medallions, before reverting to checkered walnut in 1954.

Production of the Official Police spanned from 1927 to 1969, with the pre-war models (1927-1946) distinguished by features such as the rounded “half-moon” front sight, checkered trigger, hammer, and cylinder release, along with Colt’s earlier cylinder retention system. The post-war models (1947-1969) introduced several refinements, including a ramped and serrated front sight, a newly shaped hammer with grooves, and Colt’s updated cylinder retention system. Post-war production models were offered primarily in .22 LR and .38 Special, continuing Colt’s reputation for durable and well-balanced service revolvers.
