High Standard Firearms was a respected American manufacturer renowned for producing high-quality firearms, particularly target pistols. Founded in 1926 in New Haven, Connecticut, the company originally supplied machinery and parts to other gun makers in the Connecticut Valley before transitioning to its own firearm production in 1932. High Standard operated in New Haven until 1945, then moved to Hamden, Connecticut, where it remained a fixture of the firearms industry until 1977. That year, operations shifted to East Hartford, where the company continued production until the original corporate entity dissolved in 1984. Nearly a decade later, in 1993, a completely separate entity acquired the brand assets and resurrected manufacturing in Houston, Texas, where it continued production until finally closing in 2018. High Standard gained widespread recognition for its precision .22-caliber target pistols, chambered in both .22 Short and .22 Long Rifle, which were designed with competitive shooters in mind. A hallmark of many of their later military-frame design series was an M1911A1-inspired grip angle and manual safety, making them familiar and appealing to service pistol competitors.
