Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 61, manufactured from 1932 to 1963, represented Winchester’s transition into a more modern era of small-bore rifles. It was conceived as a sleek, hammerless alternative to earlier exposed-hammer slide-action rimfire rifles like the Models 1890 and 1906, and was sold alongside the traditional Model 62. The Model 61 distinguished itself with its streamlined receiver, right-side ejection, and takedown design, which made it both visually modern and practical for transport or cleaning. Offered in multiple rimfire chamberings—including .22 Short, .22 Long, .22 Long Rifle, and .22 Winchester Rimfire (WRF)—the rifle quickly became a favorite among sportsmen and recreational shooters for its accuracy, smooth action, and dependable performance. Winchester produced the rifle with both round and octagonal 24-inch barrels to cater to different customer preferences, and even introduced a special “Routledge” smoothbore variant, optimized for .22 shotshells and marketed toward exhibition shooters and close-range pest control.

In its later years, from 1960 to 1963, the Model 61 adapted to changing market demands with a version chambered for the new .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR), which provided greater range and power than traditional rimfire cartridges. Altogether, between roughly 342,000 and 344,000 rifles were produced during its three-decade run, making the Model 61 not only one of Winchester’s most successful rimfire slide-actions, but also a symbol of the company’s ability to blend tradition with innovation before its discontinuation in 1963.
