Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Official Police is one of the most successful and historically significant double-action revolvers ever produced, serving as a trusted sidearm for countless law-enforcement agencies throughout the twentieth century. Introduced in 1927 by Colt's Manufacturing Company, the Official Police was built on Colt's medium-size "E" frame and was most commonly chambered in .38 Special, although examples were also produced in calibers such as .22 Long Rifle and .41 Colt. Designed specifically for police service, the revolver featured a robust six-shot cylinder, fixed sights, and Colt's renowned double-action mechanism, which provided an exceptionally smooth trigger pull and precise timing. Available with barrel lengths ranging from four to six inches, the Official Police was typically finished in Colt's attractive polished blue or nickel finishes and fitted with checkered walnut stocks that gave the revolver both elegance and practicality. The model quickly became one of the most widely issued police sidearms in America and also saw military service during World War II as various contract revolvers. Its reputation for durability, reliability, and accuracy made it a favorite among officers, sportsmen, and target shooters alike. In practical use, the Official Police proved capable of handling heavy training schedules and harsh field conditions while maintaining the refined operation that distinguished Colt revolvers from many of their competitors. Production continued until 1969, making the model one of Colt's longest-running revolver designs. Today, the Colt Official Police is highly regarded by collectors and enthusiasts for its historical importance, outstanding craftsmanship, and role as one of the defining American law-enforcement revolvers of the twentieth century.
