The Ishapore 2A1 is a distinctive bolt-action military rifle produced by the Rifle Factory Ishapore in India during the 1960s, representing one of the final military service rifles based on the legendary Lee-Enfield design. Developed following the adoption of the 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge by many armed forces around the world, the 2A1 was designed to provide the Indian military with a reliable and domestically manufactured rifle chambered for the newer cartridge while more modern self-loading rifles were being introduced. Although it closely resembles the British Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) No. 1 Mk III in appearance and operation, the Ishapore 2A1 was not simply a conversion of older rifles. Instead, it was manufactured using newly produced receivers and components made from stronger steel specifically intended to handle the higher pressures associated with the 7.62×51mm NATO round. The rifle retains the hallmark features that made the Lee-Enfield famous, including a smooth and exceptionally fast cock-on-closing bolt action, a detachable ten-round box magazine, and robust iron sights designed for battlefield use. 

The 2A1 variant can be identified by its recalibrated rear sight, which was graduated to 800 meters rather than the 2,000-yard sight markings found on earlier 2A models.
