Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 15, also known as the K-38 Combat Masterpiece, is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special and built on the medium K-frame. It features a 6-shot fluted cylinder with a standard frame length designed for full-power duty cartridges. In the postwar years, it was offered primarily with a 4" pinned barrel, later adding a 2" option in 1964, alongside brief 1986 runs of 6" and 8-3/8" barrels, and exceptionally rare 5" collector variants, all featuring a narrow top rib. It was offered in either a blue or nickel finish, alongside its identical stainless-steel counterpart, the Model 67, which was introduced in 1972. They were typically fitted with walnut Magna-style grips featuring S&W medallions, on a square butt frame, though late-production 2" variants transitioned to a round butt configuration in the 1990s. Originally built under traditional K-prefix serial ranges, the Model 15 transitioned through various engineering design cycles, including the pivotal deletion of the pinned barrel in 1982, before standard production ceased. A Smith & Wesson trademark is found on the frame, and the revolver features a service-oriented trigger and hammer setup tailored for law enforcement. The revolver is equipped with a 1/8" Baughman Quick Draw front sight on a plain ramp paired with a micrometer-click adjustable rear sight. The postwar history incorporates the 1957 transition from the "Combat Masterpiece" name to numerical model designations, and production spanned from 1949 to 1999 in its main run, with subsequent limited reissues in the Heritage and Classics lines.
