Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this German semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction; this is the Walther Model P1.

If you want to experience a WW2 handgun without paying antique prices, the Walther P1 is a direct descendant of the iconic P38. The Walther P1 is the aluminum-framed copy of the WWII Walther P38 pistol and has its own history. For 25 years, these pistols served with the Bundeswehr and West German police. During the 1990s, the Germans began phasing out the P1, fielding the P8 (a military version of the H&K USP), and finally retiring the weapon altogether in 2004.

The right side of the frame is stamped with two proof marks.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Walther P1 is a post-World War II evolution of the famed P38, developed to meet the needs of the newly formed West German Bundeswehr during the early Cold War period. As Germany rebuilt its military infrastructure in the 1950s, Walther resumed production in Ulm and adapted its proven wartime design into a more modern and cost-effective service pistol. Officially designated the P1 in 1963, this variant retained the reliable 9mm semi-automatic operating system of the original P38 while incorporating an aluminum frame to reduce weight and improve handling. Later refinements, including reinforcement features and internal design updates, addressed durability concerns observed in earlier models, resulting in a robust and widely issued sidearm.

Featuring a 5-inch barrel, blade front sight with a U-notch rear, and traditional ribbed grips, the P1 maintains the classic profile and ergonomics of its predecessor while reflecting postwar manufacturing advancements. Standard military and police markings, including factory inspection stamps and proof marks, underscore its role as an officially issued service weapon. Widely used by the Bundeswehr, police units, and border guards throughout the Cold War, the P1 remained in service for decades before eventual replacement, and today stands as a significant example of mid-20th century military sidearm development.
