Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 1966 Colt Single Action Frontier Scout is a classic rimfire single-action revolver produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company during the height of America’s postwar fascination with Old West styling and frontier-era handguns. Introduced in the late 1950s, the Frontier Scout was designed as a scaled-down, affordable companion to Colt’s legendary Single Action Army, offering shooters the same iconic Peacemaker profile in a lighter, more economical rimfire format. A 1966 production example comes from a mature period of Frontier Scout manufacture, when the model had become highly popular among recreational shooters, collectors, and younger enthusiasts drawn to western films and television. The revolver is typically chambered in .22 Long Rifle, with many examples also supplied with an auxiliary .22 Magnum cylinder depending on the specific variation. Built with an alloy frame and steel barrel, cylinder, and critical components, the Frontier Scout maintained good durability while keeping weight manageable and production costs lower than all-steel centerfire models. Standard barrel lengths commonly included 4.75 inches and 6 inches, paired with fixed sights consisting of a rear notch in the frame and a front blade, faithful to the traditional single-action pattern. Mechanically, it operates exactly as a classic single-action should, requiring the hammer to be manually cocked before each shot, with the cylinder indexing as the hammer is drawn back. Finishes in 1966 included examples with blued steel and anodized or color-toned alloy frames, though variations existed throughout production. Grips were commonly black composition or imitation stag-style panels, adding to the revolver's western character. While large numbers were produced, original 1966 examples in high condition, with matching box, papers, or extra-cylinder options, are increasingly sought after today. The 1966 Colt Single Action Frontier Scout remains admired as a charming and practical rimfire revolver that captured the romance of the Old West while delivering Colt styling, reliable function, and affordable shooting enjoyment.
