Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Automatic .25 from 1972 represents one of the final chapters in Colt’s long history of compact “mouse gun” pocket pistols, combining classic styling, discreet concealability, and old-world craftsmanship into a tiny defensive handgun chambered in .25 ACP. Produced during a short manufacturing window from approximately 1971 to 1973, the Colt Automatic .25 emerged after the 1968 Gun Control Act restricted the importation of many small foreign-made pistols into the United States, including the earlier Spanish-made Colt Junior. In response, Colt arranged for domestic assembly of the pistol using a design heavily based on the Astra Cub from Spain, resulting in the renamed “Colt Automatic .25” with distinctive OD-prefixed serial numbers that identify the American-assembled models. The 1972 examples are especially notable because they sit squarely in the middle of this limited production period and are often prized by collectors for their transitional place in Colt history. Mechanically, the pistol is a simple blowback-operated semi-automatic with a six-round detachable magazine, an exposed hammer, manual thumb safety, and compact steel construction that gave it a surprisingly solid feel despite its extremely small dimensions. Measuring only around 4.5 inches in overall length and weighing roughly 12 to 13 ounces unloaded, the pistol was specifically intended for deep concealment, pocket carry, or use as a backup firearm during an era when ultra-compact defensive handguns were still relatively uncommon. The polished blued finish, checkered grip panels, and traditional Colt markings gave the gun a refined appearance that contrasted with many inexpensive pocket pistols of the period. Although the .25 ACP cartridge is considered underpowered by modern defensive standards, these pistols earned a reputation for reliability with full metal jacket ammunition, which was often considered more important than raw stopping power in such a tiny firearm.

Collectors and enthusiasts today appreciate the 1972 Colt Automatic .25 not only for its historical connection to Colt’s earlier Vest Pocket pistols and European-inspired designs, but also because of its scarcity, classic styling, and association with a period when compact handguns were evolving rapidly in response to changing firearm laws and civilian carry trends. Many surviving examples still retain excellent machining quality, smooth triggers, and surprisingly tight tolerances, which has helped them maintain a loyal following among vintage firearm collectors and “mouse gun” enthusiasts decades after production ended. Some owners also note the pistol’s connection to later safety concerns involving the original firing pin design, which eventually led Colt to offer a modification program intended to reduce the risk of accidental discharge if dropped.
