The Smith & Wesson Model 57, also known as the .41 Magnum Target, is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .41 Magnum and built on the square-butt N-frame with three screws. Introduced in February 1964, it was developed alongside the .41 Magnum cartridge as a premium target and sporting revolver and was offered in both blue and nickel finishes. The Model 57 features a six-shot counterbored cylinder with a nominal length of 1.75" and was available with 4", 6", or 8-3/8" barrels, giving shooters multiple configurations suited for target shooting, hunting, and general field use. The barrel incorporates a raised serrated rib and a shrouded extractor rod, reflecting Smith & Wesson’s emphasis on both functional performance and refined presentation during the era. Sighting consists of a 1/8" red ramp front sight mounted on a ramp base, paired with a micrometer-click white-outline rear sight for precise windage and elevation adjustments. Fire control components include a .500" target hammer and either a .400" or .500" target trigger, designed to provide a controlled and consistent shooting experience. Additional features include a 10-groove serrated backstrap and forestrap, while original models displayed a large Smith & Wesson trademark on the sideplate. In 2005, a “Mountain Gun” variation was introduced with a 4" barrel, incorporating CNC manufacturing technology, an internal lock, and a new frame design. This model was later included in the Smith & Wesson Classic series in 2009, again with a 4" barrel and available in blue or nickel finishes. The Model 57 was originally produced from 1964 to 1993, with additional runs in 2005 and 2009.
