Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Diamondback is one of the most elegant and collectible double-action revolvers ever produced, combining the refined styling of the legendary Colt Python with the compact handling characteristics of Colt's smaller D-frame revolvers. Introduced in 1966 by Colt's Manufacturing Company, the Diamondback was offered in both .38 Special and .22 Long Rifle and was designed as a premium target and sporting revolver. Distinguished by its full-length ventilated rib and heavy underlug barrel—features borrowed directly from the Python—the Diamondback possessed a distinctive appearance that set it apart from other revolvers of its era. Built on the same frame as the Colt Detective Special, the revolver featured a six-shot cylinder, fully adjustable target sights, and Colt's renowned hand-fitted action, which provided an exceptionally smooth double-action pull and crisp single-action break.

Available in barrel lengths of 2½, 4, and 6 inches and finished in highly polished blue or nickel, the Diamondback exhibited the craftsmanship and attention to detail that characterized Colt's finest revolvers during the company's golden age. The .22 Long Rifle versions became especially popular among target shooters and small-game hunters, while the .38 Special models appealed to sportsmen and collectors seeking a refined defensive or trail revolver. Production continued until 1988, and relatively limited numbers compared to other Colt revolvers have contributed to the model's strong collector demand. Today, the Colt Diamondback is considered one of the most desirable postwar Colt revolvers, admired for its beauty, precision, and close resemblance to the iconic Python in a smaller and more versatile package.
