The Heckler & Koch P9S—produced from 1970 until 1995—stands as the definitive evolution of Herbert Meidel’s pioneering work in adapting HK's roller-delayed blowback system into a handgun format. Evolving from the rare single-action P9, this double-action design saw its low-profile Combat layout adopted by the US Navy SEALs for clandestine, suppressed operations. Engineered for the high velocities of the 9x19mm Parabellum, the single-stack magazine capacity held 9 rounds, while the hard-hitting .45 ACP variant was restricted to 7 rounds. Both calibers utilized cold-hammer-forged, fixed barrels with polygonal rifling for exceptional accuracy out of standard service ammunition. Mechanically, the firearm relied on an internal hammer and a frame-mounted thumb lever that acted as a cocker, slide release, and manual decocker without disrupting the operator's firing grip. To appeal to different shooters, the factory offered modular "Sport Group" packages featuring specialized muzzle weights, target sights, and an adjustable trigger over-travel stop across three main configurations: the 4-inch Combat, the 4-inch adjustable Target, and the extended 5.5-inch Sport.
