Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Introduced in 1966 as the scaled-down counterpart to the famed Python, the Colt Diamondback holds an elite status among Colt's celebrated "Seven Serpents." Built on Colt's compact, well-proportioned "D" frame, the Diamondback inherited the Python's breathtaking visual appeal—including the signature wide ventilated top rib, full-length underlug barrel, target hammer, fully adjustable Accro rear sight, and hand-fitted lockwork—while offering a lighter, faster-pointing balance. Factory bright nickel-plated Diamondbacks were manufactured in far lower quantities than standard blued variations, making pristine, high-luster nickel examples from the mid-1970s among the most fiercely pursued collector revolvers on the market today.
This specific example is an authentic 1976-production Colt Diamondback 6-shot revolver chambered in .38 Special, bearing serial number D87563. Outfitted with the ideal 4-inch full-underlug ventilated rib barrel, it features the factory mirror-like nickel finish, adjustable target rear sight, wide checkered target hammer, and original factory checkered walnut target stocks inset with brilliant gold Rampant Colt medallions. The bright nickel finish is outstanding and near-mint throughout, with dazzling mirror reflection, crisp roll-marks, and virtually no cloudy oxidation or flaking. Mechanically, the action functions with trademark Colt smoothness, cylinder lockup is bank-vault solid and on time, and the 4-inch bore is bright with sharp rifling.
