The Colt Single Action Army, often known as the SAA or “Peacemaker,” is one of the most iconic firearms in American history. Introduced in 1873, it was developed as Colt’s answer to the U.S. military’s need for a reliable metallic-cartridge revolver and was adopted as the U.S. Army’s standard sidearm during the late 19th century. Chambered originally in .45 Colt, the SAA became legendary for its strength, simplicity, and association with the American frontier. The Single Action Army uses a classic single-action mechanism, meaning the hammer must be manually cocked before each shot. Its traditional design features a fixed barrel, loading gate, removable cylinder, and a four-click hammer system that became instantly recognizable. Over the years, Colt produced the SAA in numerous barrel lengths, finishes, calibers, and special configurations, making it one of the most collectible revolvers ever made.
