Introduced in 1969 as a comprehensive, ground-up redesign of Colt's medium-frame revolver line, the Trooper MK III brought modern sintered-steel metallurgy and an innovative internal transfer-bar safety mechanism to Hartford's revolver catalog. Built on Colt's heavy "J-frame" chassis, the Trooper MK III featured a solid top strap, shrouded ejector rod shroud, coil spring mainspring lockwork, and match-grade target sights. While the vast majority of Trooper MK III revolvers were chambered in centerfire .357 Magnum, Colt produced a limited number of rimfire variants to serve as heavy-frame training and varmint sidearms. Examples chambered in .22 Magnum Rimfire (.22 WMR) are drastically scarcer than standard models, earning a reputation among Colt collectors for low production numbers, flat shooting trajectories, and incredible rimfire accuracy.
