Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Introduced in 1977 as Bill Ruger’s vision for a high-quality, 100% American-made over/under shotgun, the Ruger Red Label holds a revered place in American sporting arms history. Before Ruger adopted the iconic brushed stainless receiver frame, the very earliest Red Label shotguns were manufactured exclusively in 20 gauge with an elegant, all-blued steel receiver assembly. Produced in extremely limited quantities for less than two years under the "400-" serial prefix, these original "Blued Frame" 20-gauge Red Labels represent the most sought-after variations for Ruger collectors. Featuring sleek receiver lines, mechanical barrel selection, automatic ejectors, and fine American walnut furniture, the blued 20-gauge Red Label is an absolute masterpiece of American gunmaking.
This specific example is an authentic, highly desirable early Ruger Red Label 20-gauge "Blued Frame" over/under shotgun, bearing desirable low serial number 400-16934 indicating 1980 first-generation manufacture. Configured in classic upland game layout, it features 26-inch ventilated rib barrels chambered for 3-inch 20-gauge shells, factory blued receiver frame, fixed choke borings, single selective trigger, automatic ejectors, and a finely figured checkered American walnut stock and forend fitted with a factory red rubber buttpad. The original factory blued steel finish presents in excellent, exceptionally clean condition throughout, exhibiting high gloss luster, crisp receiver stampings, and minimal handling wear. Mechanically, the action opens crisp and smooth, lockup is vault-tight with the top lever sitting far right of center, triggers trip crisp, and both 26-inch barrel bores are mirror-bright. Offering rare first-run blued receiver provenance in prime upland game configuration, this Ruger Red Label 20 gauge is a premier investment-grade addition to any fine shotgun collection.
