First introduced in 1931 as the K-22 Outdoor Masterpiece and officially designated as the Model 17 in 1957, this flagship target revolver set the world standard for .22 Long Rifle precision wheelguns. Built on Smith & Wesson's legendary medium K-frame platform, the Model 17 was engineered to provide competitive target shooters and outdoorsmen with identical weight, trigger feel, and sight geometry to S&W's full-bore centerfire target revolvers. Celebrated for its micrometer click-adjustable rear sight, 6-inch barrel, recessed cylinder chambers, and target hammer and trigger setup, the Model 17-4 iteration represents one of the final classic engineering generations produced in Springfield, Massachusetts, prior to the elimination of pinned barrels.

This specific example is an authentic Smith & Wesson Model 17-4 bearing serial number 99K1943, manufactured in 1981. Chambered in economical .22 Long Rifle, it features the iconic 6-inch barrel, recessed 6-shot cylinder, factory high-gloss blued finish, case-hardened target hammer and trigger, fully adjustable rear target sight, and a custom set of natural stag horn grips displaying deep bark texture and rich warm coloration. Exhibiting deep original factory bluing, a mirror-bright bore with sharp rifling, tight cylinder lockup, and exceptionally smooth mechanics in both single and double action, this late-production K-22 Masterpiece is ready for competitive target plinking, field carry, or placement in a premier Smith & Wesson collection.
