Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger New Model Single-Six is a modernized version of one of the most successful rimfire revolvers ever produced, blending classic Old West styling with improved safety features and Ruger’s famously rugged construction. Manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. beginning in 1973, the New Model Single-Six evolved from the earlier “Old Model” three-screw Single-Six revolvers by introducing a transfer-bar safety system that significantly improved safe carry capability. Chambered primarily in .22 Long Rifle and often supplied with an interchangeable .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire cylinder, the revolver was designed for recreational shooting, small game hunting, trail carry, and firearms training while maintaining the traditional feel of a frontier-era single-action revolver. One of the defining characteristics of the New Model Single-Six is its transfer-bar ignition system, which allows the revolver to be safely carried with all six chambers loaded because the hammer cannot contact the firing pin unless the trigger is fully depressed. This was a major improvement over traditional single-action revolvers that typically required carrying the hammer down on an empty chamber for safety. The revolver retained the classic loading-gate operation and a manually cocked hammer associated with Old West six-shooters, preserving the nostalgic handling characteristics that made the design so popular. Most examples feature steel construction with blued or stainless finishes, six-shot cylinders, fixed or adjustable sights, depending on model, and barrel lengths ranging from compact trail versions to longer target-oriented configurations.

In practical use, the Ruger New Model Single-Six earned an exceptional reputation for durability, reliability, and accuracy, with shooters frequently praising its solid lockup, crisp trigger feel, and excellent balance. The revolver’s low recoil and inexpensive rimfire ammunition made it especially popular for introducing new shooters to handgun fundamentals, while experienced shooters appreciated its quality craftsmanship and versatility in the field. The optional .22 Magnum cylinder also gave the revolver greater utility for small-game hunting and pest control, expanding its practical capabilities beyond simple plinking. Ruger’s investment-cast steel construction and robust internal design contributed to a reputation for longevity that allowed many revolvers to withstand decades of heavy use with minimal wear. Over time, the New Model Single-Six became one of Ruger’s flagship revolvers and one of the most recognizable rimfire handguns in America. Today, the Ruger New Model Single-Six is regarded as one of the finest modern single-action rimfire revolvers ever made, admired for its blend of classic Western styling, modern safety engineering, outstanding durability, and timeless shooting enjoyment.
