The Colt Combat Commander MK IV Series 80 was first produced in 1983. This example was made in 1984, which was the second year of production.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1983, Colt radically transformed its mid-sized platform by introducing the "Mark IV Series 80" Commanders, a milestone release defined by a controversial internal firing-pin safety block mechanism. Engineered to prevent accidental drop-discharges, this system utilized two interconnected frame levers and a spring-loaded slide plunger that physically blocked the firing pin until the trigger was fully depressed. To house these new components, Colt permanently altered the internal geometry of John Browning's design, requiring a unique vertical frame slot and a slide plunger cavity that made Series 80 fire-control parts incompatible with legacy 1911s. To satisfy diverse market preferences, Colt maintained continuous production of all traditional .45 ACP, 9mm Parabellum, and .38 Super chamberings for both the all-steel Combat Commander and the aluminum-framed Lightweight Commander, utilizing a newly standardized oval-loop hammer across early production. The product line modernized further in 1985 with the introduction of an all-stainless steel Combat Commander variant, which offered superior corrosion resistance and ultimately replaced the delicate, wear-prone satin nickel finish entirely. 
 
The platform evolved within the MK IV Series 80 catalog in 1992 with the introduction of the "Enhanced" subset models—easily identifiable by an "E" suffix at the end of their serial numbers—which integrated a flat-top slide rib, angled cocking serrations, a sharply elongated skeletonized combat hammer, an upswept duckbill grip safety, and a scalloped receiver under the trigger guard for a higher hand hold. Remaining a staple of factory production for decades, this generation established the modern structural blueprint for Colt's compact firearms, serving as a highly visible, generation-defining transition into the company's contemporary manufacturing era.
