The Colt MK IV Series 80 Government Model .380 ACP is a compact, .380-caliber variant of the 1911-style Government Model, introduced in the 1980s as Colt’s attempt to shrink the full-size 1911 platform into a deep-concealment handgun. Unlike the .45 ACP Government Model, this version is scaled down and chambered in .380 ACP, typically with a 3.25-inch barrel, fixed sights, and a single-action trigger system with traditional 1911-style manual controls. It uses a single-stack magazine (usually 7+1 capacity depending on magazine type) and retains the general look and feel of a 1911, but internally it is heavily redesigned for the smaller cartridge and frame size rather than being a simple caliber conversion. The Series 80 firing pin safety system is included, adding internal drop safety mechanisms that block the firing pin unless the trigger is fully pressed. Compared to Colt’s Mustang line, the Government Model .380 is larger, heavier, and more controllable, sitting in a niche between pocket pistols and full-size service handguns. It was produced mainly from the mid-1980s into the 1990s and is now considered a somewhat uncommon Colt variant, valued for its unusual combination of 1911 styling, .380 ACP chambering, and full “Government Model” proportions scaled down into a compact defensive pistol.
