Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Mustang is a line of lightweight, single-action pocket pistols chambered for the .380 ACP cartridge, produced by Colt’s Manufacturing Company. Introduced in 1986, the Mustang was a compact, simplified version of Colt’s earlier .380 Government Model, which itself was released in 1983 as the Colt Mark IV Series 80 Government Model .380. The Government Model .380 was visually reminiscent of the Colt M1911, scaled down to approximately 78% of the full-sized M1911. The original Mustang reduced the barrel, slide, and grip length, lowering the capacity to 5 rounds, creating a truly concealable pocket pistol. In 1988, Colt introduced the Mustang Plus II, which retained the compact dimensions of the original Mustang but increased the magazine capacity to 7 rounds by utilizing the longer grip frame of the Government Model. This enhancement made the Plus II more appealing to shooters who desired additional capacity without sacrificing concealability. The Plus II was produced with both blue steel and stainless steel finishes, with stainless models becoming available around 1990. Production of the Mustang series continued until 1996. In 2011, Colt reintroduced the Mustang PocketLite, an alloy-framed version of the original Mustang. Meanwhile, in 2013, the Mustang XSP, a polymer-framed model, was introduced, continuing the line’s legacy as a reliable, concealable .380 ACP pistol.
