Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 7400 is a gas-operated semi-automatic hunting rifle produced by Remington Arms from 1981 until 2004, developed as an improved successor to the earlier Remington Model 742 Woodsmaster. Designed primarily for big-game hunting, particularly in the wooded regions of North America where quick follow-up shots are valuable, the Model 7400 combines traditional sporting rifle aesthetics with the fast operation of a semi-automatic action. The rifle operates using a gas-operated system that cycles the bolt automatically after each shot, feeding from a detachable box magazine typically holding four rounds, though higher-capacity magazines were also produced. The 7400 was offered in several popular hunting calibers, including .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .280 Remington, .30-06 Springfield, and later .308 Winchester, allowing it to cover a wide range of game from deer to larger North American species. Most rifles feature a 22-inch barrel and a traditional walnut stock with checkering on the grip and fore-end, though later production models were also available with synthetic stocks and matte finishes designed for harsher hunting conditions. The rifle’s design incorporated improvements over the Model 742, including strengthened internal components and refinements to the action rails intended to improve durability and reliability during extended use.

Like many Remington sporting rifles, the 7400 was also drilled and tapped for scope mounts, reflecting the widespread adoption of optical sights by hunters during its production years. The rifle gained popularity among deer hunters, especially in regions such as the northeastern and midwestern United States, where dense woods favor a fast-handling rifle capable of rapid follow-up shots. Although it was eventually replaced by the updated Remington Model 750, the Model 7400 remains a well-known and widely used hunting rifle, appreciated for its classic appearance, practical semi-automatic operation, and its role as one of Remington’s most recognizable big-game autoloading rifles of the late twentieth century.
