The Smith & Wesson Model 29-4 “special” is one of those late-1980s N-frame .44 Magnum revolvers that sits in a really interesting spot between old-school hand-fit Smith & Wesson craftsmanship and the beginning of the company’s modern production upgrades. The “-4” engineering change was introduced around 1988, and it brought a series of durability-focused improvements over earlier Model 29 variants—most notably a strengthened yoke retention system, radiused frame studs to reduce stress wear, and refinements to internal lockwork to better handle sustained .44 Magnum recoil and high-round-count use. Unlike earlier 29-2 or 29-3 guns that still carried more traditional pinned and recessed features, the 29-4 reflects Smith & Wesson’s shift into more modern manufacturing tolerances while still retaining a fully carbon-steel, blued N-frame build with the classic deep polish and checkered walnut or rubber grips depending on configuration. It remained a six-shot, double-action/single-action revolver chambered in both .44 Magnum and .44 Special, giving it flexibility for heavy hunting loads or lighter shooting sessions, and it typically came with adjustable rear sights, a red ramp front sight, and barrel lengths ranging from compact 3–4 inch “carry” versions to 6.5 and 8-inch hunting or target models.
