Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger P85 MKII is a rugged full-size semi-automatic pistol that represented an important stage in the evolution of Ruger’s early centerfire handgun designs, earning a reputation for exceptional durability, reliability, and robust construction during the late 1980s and 1990s. Manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. and chambered in 9mm Luger, the P85 was originally developed in response to the U.S. military’s XM9 service pistol trials, where Ruger sought to compete against designs such as the Beretta 92FS and SIG Sauer P226. Although the pistol did not win the military contract, it became highly successful in civilian, law enforcement, and security markets because of its reputation as an extremely tough and dependable handgun. The later MKII variants incorporated engineering refinements and safety improvements over the earliest production pistols, including updates to the firing mechanism and decocker system following Ruger’s early safety recall program. One of the defining characteristics of the P85 MKII was its oversized, heavily built construction, with a hard-anodized aluminum alloy frame paired with a massive investment-cast steel slide that gave the pistol a distinctly durable, almost overbuilt appearance. Mechanically, the pistol used a traditional double-action/single-action trigger system with ambidextrous slide-mounted safety/decocking levers and a short-recoil locked-breech operating system. Most examples featured a 4.5-inch barrel, fixed combat sights, an external extractor, and double-stack magazines typically holding 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition. In practical use, the Ruger P85 MKII became famous for its ability to withstand abuse and continue functioning under extremely harsh conditions, with many shooters and armorers describing the pistol as nearly indestructible. The heavy slide and substantial overall weight contributed to mild felt recoil and excellent reliability with a wide range of ammunition types, while the broad grip frame and large controls made the pistol easy to manipulate even under stressful conditions.

Shooters frequently praised the handgun’s tank-like durability and straightforward operation, though some criticized its bulk, blocky ergonomics, and comparatively heavy trigger pull compared with more refined European service pistols of the era. Despite its somewhat utilitarian appearance, the P85 MKII developed a loyal following among owners who valued reliability and affordability over cosmetic refinement. The pistol also helped establish Ruger’s long-running P-series family, which later evolved into models such as the P89, P94, and P95. Although eventually eclipsed by lighter polymer-framed striker-fired handguns, the P85 MKII remains respected for its durability and dependable service performance. Today, the Ruger P85 MKII is regarded as one of the toughest American-made service pistols of its era, admired for its rugged engineering, legendary reliability, and important role in Ruger’s development as a major semi-automatic pistol manufacturer.
