The Ruger P85 MKII is a rugged full-size semi-automatic pistol that represented an important stage in the evolution of Ruger’s early centerfire handgun designs, earning a reputation for exceptional durability, reliability, and robust construction during the late 1980s and 1990s. Manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. and chambered in 9mm Luger, the P85 was originally developed in response to the U.S. military’s XM9 service pistol trials, where Ruger sought to compete against designs such as the Beretta 92FS and SIG Sauer P226. Although the pistol did not win the military contract, it became highly successful in civilian, law enforcement, and security markets because of its reputation as an extremely tough and dependable handgun. The later MKII variants incorporated engineering refinements and safety improvements over the earliest production pistols, including updates to the firing mechanism and decocker system following Ruger’s early safety recall program. One of the defining characteristics of the P85 MKII was its oversized, heavily built construction, with a hard-anodized aluminum alloy frame paired with a massive investment-cast steel slide that gave the pistol a distinctly durable, almost overbuilt appearance.
