Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 638, also known as the .38 Bodyguard Airweight Stainless, is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special and built on the round-butt alloy J-frame with traditional three-screw construction. Introduced as a lightweight, snag-resistant alternative to standard J-frame models, the Model 638 combined a clear-anodized fuse alloy frame with a stainless steel cylinder and barrel, making it especially appealing for concealed carry and defensive use. It features a 1 7/8-inch barrel, a five-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.53 inches, and a shrouded hammer that preserves the option for single-action fire while reducing the likelihood of snagging on clothing. Additional features include a .312-inch smooth trigger, “Airweight” laser-etching on the sideplate of later versions, and the S&W trademark stamped on the frame under the thumbpiece. In 2002, production changes designated as the 638-3 introduced the internal lock system and updated frame address markings. Produced in 1989 and from 1996 to the present, the Model 638 remains one of Smith & Wesson’s most enduring lightweight revolvers, valued for its balance of portability and snag-free design.
