Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this scarce and discontinued semi-automatic pistol for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt MKIV/Series '80 Mustang!

The Mustang Stainless Steel is the all-stainless variation of Colt’s compact Mustang line, produced from 1990 to 1997. Finished in satin stainless, these models offered increased corrosion resistance and a slightly heftier, more solid feel compared with the Pocketlite alloy versions, appealing to shooters who preferred the durability and polished look of stainless construction. Retaining the Mustang’s short 2.75" barrel, single-action control, and Series ’80 firing-pin safety, the stainless examples combined classic 1911-inspired ergonomics with a practical, low-maintenance finish—qualities that have made them desirable both as reliable concealed-carry pistols and as collectible Mustang variants.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt MKIV/Series ’80 Mustang stainless-steel variation (manufactured 1990–1997) married the compact, pocketable geometry of the Mustang with an all-stainless construction that changed the pistol’s handling, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Built on the same scaled-down 1911-style architecture, the stainless Mustang retained the short ~2.75" barrel, exposed hammer, frame-mounted thumb safety, and single-action trigger that made the model intuitive to 1911 shooters. Where it differed most from the lightweight “Pocketlite” alloy versions was mass and finish: the stainless slide and frame gave the pistol a firmer, more solid recoil impulse and better resistance to corrosion and finish wear. Internally, it incorporated Colt’s Series ’80 passive firing-pin safety, which added an additional drop-safety element to the design — a meaningful feature for a carry gun — while externally the satin stainless finish and controls produced a distinctive look that appealed to buyers who wanted a durable, low-maintenance carry pistol that still had classically American styling. In practical use, the stainless Mustang proved to be a sensible compromise between carryability and shootability. The extra weight helped tame felt recoil of the .380 ACP cartridge in a very small package, improving follow-up shot control compared with the ultralight alloy models, and the ergonomic, 1911-like grip angle and crisp single-action trigger aided accuracy for close-range defensive work. Sight options were conventional for the class — small fixed or drift-adjustable notch-and-post sights — and the controls remained familiar and easy to manipulate for those transitioning from full-size 1911s. As a result, stainless Mustangs found a following among owners who wanted a more robust daily-carry pistol or a stylish, serviceable example for range use; today they’re sought after by collectors and concealed-carry enthusiasts alike for their combination of durability, classic ergonomics, and the specific Series ’80-era characteristics that mark a distinct chapter in Colt’s Mustang lineage.
