Produced by Sturm, Ruger & Co., the No. 1 platform is based on a Farquharson-style falling-block action, widely regarded as one of the strongest and simplest rifle actions ever developed, allowing the rifle to safely handle a wide range of high-pressure cartridges. The “V” Varminter model is distinguished by its heavy-contour barrel, typically 26 inches in length, which provides increased rigidity, improved heat resistance during extended firing, and enhanced velocity for small-caliber, high-speed cartridges. Common chamberings have included .22-250 Remington, .220 Swift, .204 Ruger, and similar varmint rounds known for flat trajectories and explosive terminal performance on small game. The rifle features a single-shot design with an underlever that drops the breechblock for loading, encouraging deliberate, precise shooting rather than rapid fire, which aligns well with the demands of varmint and target shooting. Stocks are usually crafted from high-quality walnut with a beavertail fore-end that offers a stable platform for benchrest or bipod use, along with fine checkering and a classic American sporting profile.
