Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 422, also known as the .22 Single Action Field/Target Pistol, is a single-action-only semi-automatic pistol chambered in .22 Long Rifle and built on an aluminum alloy frame with a steel slide. It features a concealed internal hammer paired with a .312" serrated trigger. Throughout its production, it was offered with either a 4-1/2" or 6" barrel length, finished in a matte blue. Standard "Field" models are fitted with black plastic grips and fixed sights, featuring a .131" serrated blade front sight. The premium "Target" variant is mechanically identical to the Field model but features checkered walnut grips with S&W medallions, a slightly narrower .125" serrated blade front sight, and an adjustable rear sight. The Model 422 utilizes a 10-shot magazine, though a 12-shot magazine was introduced from 1992 to 1993. The Model 422 design derives from an improved, lengthened variation of the Model 61 Escort architecture, developed to offer an economical rimfire autoloader. Manufacturing originally commenced in Springfield, Massachusetts, before later transitioning to Houlton, Maine. Production spanned from 1987 to 1996.
