The Ruger Vaquero is a single-action revolver introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in 1993 as a modern reinterpretation of the classic 19th-century “cowboy” revolver design. Mechanically, it uses a single-action lockwork system, meaning the hammer must be manually cocked before each shot, and it incorporates a transfer bar safety system, allowing safe carry with all chambers loaded without requiring a half-cock notch. The original Vaquero was built on Ruger’s large “Blackhawk-sized” frame, making it significantly more robust than historical single-action revolvers and capable of handling modern high-pressure loads in appropriate chamberings. Standard features include fixed iron sights (a blade front and frame-integral rear groove), a solid frame with loading gate on the right side, and traditional grip geometry designed for recoil control in magnum cartridges.
