Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Vaquero, introduced in 1993 by Sturm, Ruger & Co., is a modern single-action revolver that pays tribute to the iconic cowboy guns of the Old West. Originally built on the rugged, large New Model Blackhawk frame, the Vaquero quickly became a favorite among Cowboy Action Shooting enthusiasts thanks to its blend of classic styling and modern engineering. While it evokes the traditional look and feel of historic six-shooters, it is enhanced with Ruger’s transfer bar mechanism and loading gate interlock, allowing for safe carry with all six chambers loaded. In 2005, Ruger updated the lineup by introducing the scaled-down "New Vaquero" frame, which brought modern mechanical improvements, including a patented reverse indexing pawl to simplify loading and a traditionally beveled cylinder for smoother holstering. Across both generations, its cold-hammer-forged barrel delivers precise rifling for excellent accuracy, while the western-style grip offers exceptional comfort and natural pointing. Offered in several finishes, including traditional blued steel, richly styled case-hardened finishes, and striking high-gloss stainless steel, the Vaquero captured the timeless visual appeal of classic frontier-era revolvers while maintaining Ruger’s reputation for durability and craftsmanship. Ruger also produced the Vaquero in an array of calibers and specialized variants, giving Cowboy Action Shooting competitors, collectors, and recreational shooters alike a broad selection of models suited for everything from competition and field carry to display and historical appreciation.
