Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Introduced in 1996 as a contemporary evolution of Savage's classic lever-action aesthetics paired w/ Ruger's iconic rotary magazine technology, the Ruger Model 96 (produced as the 96/22 in .22 LR) represents one of Ruger's most unique short-lived rifle lines. Discontinued in 2009, the Model 96 was distinguished by its short 55-degree lever stroke—allowing for extremely fast cycling without moving the hand far from the wrist of the stock—and its seamless integration w/ standard 10/22 10-round rotary magazines. Featuring a lightweight aluminum receiver, visible external hammer, cross-bolt safety, and traditional carbine barrel band styling, the 96/22 gained a devoted cult following among rimfire collectors seeking lever-action speed w/ flush rotary magazine reliability.
This specific example is a first-year production Ruger Model 96/22 manufactured in 1996, bearing serial number 620-04958. Chambered in .22 LR, it features an 18.5-inch blued barrel, folding rear sight, gold bead front sight, factory flush 10-round rotary magazine, smooth hardwood carbine stock w/ barrel band, and comes equipped w/ a clear Simmons optical scope mounted to the receiver rail. Crisp factory roll-markings include "RUGER MODEL NINETY-SIX" on the receiver and "22 LR CAL." on the barrel flank. Preserved in fantastic condition w/ clean blued/anodized metal surfaces, smooth wood grain, short-throw lever cycling, and a mirror-bright bore w/ sharp rifling, this collectible 1996 Ruger 96/22 is a prime turn-key lever-action rimfire package for the field or any Ruger collection.
