Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger New Model Single-Six SSM is a distinctive centerfire variant of the famous Single-Six revolver line, combining the classic styling and handling of Ruger’s traditional single-action platform with the practical versatility of the .32 H&R Magnum cartridge. Produced by Sturm, Ruger & Co., the “SSM” designation refers to the .32-caliber New Model Single-Six variant, a model manufactured in several production runs from 1984 through 2015 according to Ruger’s serial number history. Unlike the more common rimfire Single-Six models chambered in .22 LR or .22 Magnum, the SSM was built as a six-shot centerfire revolver intended for small-game hunting, trail carry, target shooting, and enthusiasts who appreciated mild recoil with greater power than rimfire cartridges. Chambered in .32 H&R Magnum, it can also safely fire the lighter .32 S&W and .32 S&W Long cartridges, giving shooters a wide range of ammunition options from soft target loads to more energetic field rounds. The revolver uses Ruger’s New Model transfer-bar safety system, allowing safe carry with all six chambers loaded while preserving the traditional single-action manual of arms, where the hammer must be cocked for each shot. Ruger notes this mechanism as a major safety feature of the New Model line. Most examples were built with steel construction in blued or stainless finishes, fixed or adjustable sights depending on configuration, and barrel lengths commonly suited to field use. Like other Single-Six revolvers, the SSM uses a loading gate and ejector rod system rather than a swing-out cylinder, giving it the feel and rhythm of a classic frontier revolver while benefiting from modern metallurgy and manufacturing.

In practical use, the .32 H&R Magnum chambering gives the revolver a reputation for excellent accuracy, low recoil, pleasant report compared with larger magnum handguns, and enough power for pests, varmints, or trail tasks. Shooters often praise these revolvers for their durability, smooth handling, and the balance between traditional cowboy-style shooting and practical utility. Because production numbers were lower than standard rimfire Single-Six models, the SSM has become especially desirable among collectors and Ruger enthusiasts. Today, the Ruger New Model Single-Six SSM is regarded as one of the most interesting and underrated members of the Single-Six family, valued for its uncommon chambering, strong construction, and blend of old-west character with modern centerfire versatility.
