The Ruger New Vaquero is a modern single-action revolver introduced in 2005 as a redesigned successor to the original Vaquero. Built on Ruger's smaller mid-size XR-3 frame, the New Vaquero more closely replicates the size, balance, and handling of the classic Colt Single Action Army, making it especially popular with cowboy action shooters and traditional revolver enthusiasts. Chambered in .357 Magnum/.38 Special, .45 Colt, and select distributor-exclusive calibers, the New Vaquero features fixed sights, a six-shot cylinder, cold hammer-forged barrel, transfer-bar safety system, reverse-indexing pawl for easier loading and unloading, and all-steel construction in both blued and stainless-steel configurations. Barrel lengths have included 3.75-inch, 4.62-inch, and 5.5-inch models, along with special variants such as the Montado, Bisley, TALO exclusives, and engraved commemorative editions. Unlike the original large-frame Vaquero, the New Vaquero was designed around standard-pressure ammunition while offering dimensions and handling characteristics much closer to the 1873 Colt revolver it emulates.
