Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Allen & Thurber produced a wide family of mid-19th century muzzle-loading pistols that can be grouped by their hammer arrangements and barrel fittings: their earliest and best-known “pocket rifle” was an under-hammer (or boot/underbar) rifled single-shot introduced in the late 1830s and sold in calibers from roughly .28 to .44 with long barrels for more accurate fire; the bar-hammer (or tube/topped bar) single-shot is among the most distinctive Allen designs and is closely associated with screw-off (removable) barrels and a double-action trigger arrangement in many examples; side-hammer single-shots (and heavier side-hammer “target” versions) place the hammer to the side of the frame to aid sighting and reduce snagging and are documented in a range of lengths and calibers; center-hammer single-shots are also recorded, typically in common pocket calibers, and at least some catalogued specimens show the hammer formed or curved to the right to clear the sightline rather than being perfectly vertical; across these types you’ll find the characteristic part-octagon/part-round barrel profiles, percussion cap ignition, walnut grips, and modest ornamentation that mark Allen & Thurber work.
